First Mode This animation shows a 2-dimensional bar, pinned at each end, vibrating in its first mode. You can tell it's the first mode because there is only one hump. When I say "pinned" I mean that the bar can rotate at each end, but it cannot move up or down, left or right. If the ends were fixed -- that is, no rotational or translational movement -- then the mode shape would look different.
